A dynamic new art exhibit is currently on display in Alton.

On July 6th, the opening reception for Headwaters Arts’ new show, “Trilogy,” was held in the Headwaters Arts Gallery at Alton Mill Arts Center.

The exhibition features painter Marnie Cook, glass artist Catherine Thompson and woodturner Laurence Kristan.

The exhibition, which runs until August 5, features more than 90 works of art.

Kristan explained that he uses fallen or found wood as the base for almost all of his creations. He used to run a woodworking shop, but after retiring he learned the art of wood turning.

Kristan said she loves her new hobby and that since she started, her work has gradually been shown in more galleries. She also said she has sold a lot of her work.

Woodturner Kristan is always on the lookout for his next piece. He says he gets great satisfaction from creating works of art from things that would normally rot or be thrown into the fire.

“It feels really good when people appreciate what I do,” Kristan says.

Wood turning has become a family business for Kristan, and now her daughter Lucy joins her in the business.

Kristan said she was impressed with Lucy’s willingness to try all sorts of experimental, time-consuming wood-turning projects.

Lucy said planning is a very important part of wood turning, and talking about the artwork often takes longer than actually turning it.

“They’re a lot of fun to work with,” Lucy said.

Headwaters Arts Gallery is located at the Alton Mill Arts Centre, 1402 Queen Street West, and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
