A former north Queensland miner who moved to a tropical haven for the quality of its wood has opened the doors of his shed to share his passion for woodworking.

Long-time Whitsunday resident Win Radke shares his passion for woodworking.

Instead, there is a burning dedication and love for the craft of woodworking, which he has continued to pursue throughout his adult life.

The long-time Whitsunday resident, now in his 80s, has worked as a mine manager at Peak Downs Mines, and on long weekends off, he and his mates often meet “strange people.” “They were collecting ore.” He developed a new type of wood and began experimenting at a sawmill in Moranbah.

“After a while, once we started doing it, it wasn’t flash, but we started making shapes and it started to mean something to us, like making vases and potholders and things like that.”

“I thought it would be really difficult to take a gnarled block of old wood that looks like nothing else and make something that is both practical and fun to look at.

“And the fact that I was able to do something unrelated; [to your job], will interest you and take you beyond being exhausted and tired. ”

When he and his wife Robin decided to move to the Whitsundays for retirement, finding quality timber close to home was an important factor to consider.

The decision was made easy because this area was known for its red cedar, which is suitable for making furniture.

Mr. Radke has been making a variety of wooden creations for many years and is always the best choice for birthday gift ideas.

However, after retiring, it became a full-time hobby, giving him a purpose to fill his days instead of “watching TV.”

Although Mr. Radke’s home is full of works made of wood, and there are considerably fewer other materials visible in the Strathdickey home, a significant portion of Mr. Radke’s work is elsewhere, and over the years many It has been given to people.

Special tables, special candle holders, benches and beds, and all kinds of furniture made of different types of wood will remain in the memory of those who met him.

“And that’s why I keep doing it, because no matter how good you are, there’s always someone still making things out of wood. That’s a real challenge for me,” he said. added. The area’s woodturners were another reason his passion remained undiminished.

The number of Whitsunday woodcutters has varied over the years from three to 10, but they always meet once a month to experiment together.

They also spent weeks, and even months, completing the pieces that will be displayed at the Proserpine Showground.

“Because encountering defects and fractures doesn’t happen overnight,” Radke said.

“What a woodturner is trying to do is remove the roughest stuff.” [piece of wood] And in general, such rough pieces of wood have more highlights than ordinary ordinary everyday wood.

“You do the best you can, then step away, think about it, and then come back and try something a little different.

“And if the woodturner isn’t in a hurry to get something done, it just takes as long as it takes.”

As for the future of his craft, Radke says he hopes to be able to share his passion with others over the years, but two of his grandchildren continue to ask for help in times of need. He said he was happy to know that. He makes his own wooden table.
