The Carpentry Store, based in Naas, featured owner Patrick Fay telling reporter Mary Fanning on a TV show how the growing popularity of wood lathes saved his business. The organization has 18 guilds across the country, and the Midlands branch uses a carpentry shop classroom for monthly demonstrations.

This year is a very special year for the Irish Woodworkers’ Union as we celebrate our 40th anniversary.th anniversary. To celebrate, they asked 18 guilds across the country to design legacy pieces from ash blocks. This is a particularly poignant topic given the threat to trees from ash dieback disease. Mary Fanning went behind the scenes with Patricia Burns, a woodturner based on the outskirts of Naas, to see how her skills have improved over the past two years. She was “shocked by the skill with which she created these wonderful works of art, and by her camaraderie and friendship,” the reporter said.

Nationwide also met Emmett Kane, a world-renowned woodturning artist from Castledermot. His works are in demand all over the world.

Several Kildare woodcutters will feature in the TV production, which will be rebroadcast on RTE +1 on April 19th It premiered at 7am on RTE 1 and RTE News Channel the following weekend.
