RTE national programme visits Kildare for wood turning feature

The ancient art of wood turning will be featured on RTE’s Nationwide next Friday, 19th April.Number 7pm

Naas-based The Carpentry Store will appear on TV as owner Patrick Fahy tells reporter Mary Fanning how the growing popularity of wood turning lathes saved his business. Woodturning is one of the oldest crafts, dating back to 1500 BC, and was in danger of being lost in Ireland until it was revived in 1983 with the founding of the Irish Woodturning Guild.

Nationwide photographed the store, which is based on the M7 Business Park, in 2019 and returned to the site last month to cover the Midlands branch of Irish Woodturners.

The organisation has 18 guilds across the country, with the Midland chapter using a carpentry shop classroom for monthly demonstrations.

This year is a special one for the Irish Woodturning Guild as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.Number 40th anniversary. To mark the occasion, they asked 18 guilds across the country to design legacy pieces out of blocks of ash wood – a particularly poignant theme given the threat to the tree from ash blight disease. The Midland branch will select seven pieces for an exhibition entitled “Turning turns 40” at the Hunt Museum in Limerick, which will then travel to venues around Ireland and in the UK.

Mary Fanning went behind the scenes with woodturner Patricia Barnes, based just outside Naas, to see how her skills have improved over the past two years. “I was blown away by the camaraderie and friendship, as well as the skill that goes into producing some incredible works of art,” she said.

Nationwide also met world-renowned artist Emmett Kane of Castledermot Woodturning, whose work is in demand around the world.

The TV show, which features several Kildare woodworkers, will be broadcast again on RTE +1 on April 19th.Number It premiered the following weekend on RTE 1 at 7pm and was also shown on the RTE News Channel.
